How to get great at Google Ads

I used to be obsessed with football (soccer) when I was younger.

I used to watch many football games and even listen to radio shows.

One of them was on a Greek radio by two dudes who used to talk about advanced tactics and the psychology part of sports.

I remember a story that they told that stuck in my mind since.

The story goes like this:

Two beginners are playing tennis against each other. The one plays safe, he makes sure every ball goes over the net and hits his opponent’s half. His aim is to win the match.

The other dude is the exact opposite – he takes risks, his backhands and forehands point to the edges of the his opponent half. But many times… he misses the target.

The match ends and the dude who played safe wins it.

Guess who became a professional tennis player?

If your guess was the dude who was taking risks throughout the game you’re right.

The one who played safe didn’t make huge progress. He was avoiding making mistakes at any cost. But this cost him in the long run since without making mistakes he didn’t make progress.

Whereas the dude who was taking risks wasn’t afraid of making mistakes and look stoopid. Every mistake was feedback for his game.

The same goes for Google Ads, pretty much.

The moment you launch your campaign all kinds of problems emerge.

Landing page isn’t converting? Optimise, test different copy, find a way to make it work.

Not many conversions coming in? Add new Ad Groups, pause thoze that don’t perform.

Google ads (and online advertising in general) is about testing to find winners and once find them scale your campaign.

And inevitably there are going to be mistakes along the way but who cares?

And if you don’t get good at Google Ads, you might end up being a tennis pro, who knows…
