A sad story follows: (for a dramatic effect):
It was August 2023, a scorching summer in Greece.
I walk up and have Greek breakfast (coffee & cigarettes) with my brother. After putting out the second cigarette, I pull out my phone to check the number of clicks I got the previous day from organic Google search for my blog.
The average number of clicks I was getting per day was 190. Things were promising; the clicks were getting up almost every day.
But that morning things got a different direction.
My traffic got demolished, and I was back at 100 clicks a day. What was even worse the upcoming weeks my daily click average kept going down and down until it was all gone.
The exact update had an effect on almost all niche site owners and the numbers haven’t changed since.
(Google now prioritises forums including Quora and Reddit in their organic search results. I heard they do it because they value normal human conversation to collect insights about human psychology and consumer behaviour.)
So… what’s the moral of the story?
The moral of the story is it’s not wise to build your business on a platform where an algo update can turn your business into a non-business overnight.
What about Google Ads? You still reply on an algo.
It’s true, advertising in Google comes with other problems like your account might be locked one day or a bunch of other trap you might fall into.
That’s why it makes sense to build an email list with your Google advertising and communicate with them frequently whether this is via phone or email.
The leads you acquire through advertising are yours – you won’t lose them because of an algo update. You’ll have more control over your business.
