Ad Dilemma: Start with Max clicks or Max Conversions?

Came across this question the other day:

‘Start with Max Clicks or Max Conversions?’

Before going into the answer, let’s clarify this: The bidding strategy in Google Ads is key.

It can make or break your campaign.

Choose the wrong one and it will wreck your efforts. Choose the right one and see leads and appointments consistently coming in.

How do you go about picking the right one?

It depends on the stage of the campaign you’re at.

If you just get started your initial goal is to establish top quality of traffic.

But many state: ‘I just want conversions.’

And it makes sense, you’re running Google Ads to get conversions and grow your business.

The trouble is, at the start there’s going to be a lot of junk.

Junk impressions. Junk Clicks. Junk Search Terms.

You gotta remove the junk and refine your traffic to point the algo in the right direction and establish high quality traffic for your campaign.

Once you start hitting a steady number of conversions per month, you can switch to focusing on conversions.

In plain English, imo it’s better to start with Max Clicks and switch to Max Conversions.

With Max Clicks as your bidding strategy the algo is going to find (you guessed it) as many clicks as possible.

When switching to Max Conversions the algo is going to search for users that are more likely to convert.

And all the above begs the question:

How long should I keep Max Clicks before switching to Max Conversions?

There’s NO a specific rule that says you keep it for 3 weeks or 5 weeks or whatever.

There going to be times you’ll be able to switch within the first 6 weeks while there times that might take up to 3 months.

Google ads is a tricky, ever-evolving game.
