How to use Google Keyword Planner?

I was asked an interesting question from a prospect the other day:

How to use Google keyword planner?

For those aren’t familiar, the keyword planner is a tool that helps you see what users are searching for.

Say for example your business is about furniture-making, you could set up your Google Ads account (without needing to pay anything) and search for keywords users search for related to your business.

Such terms can be ‘furniture making near me’, ‘best furniture maker near me’ or ‘buy furniture from furniture maker’.

Plus, it also shows you the number of each search happens every month. For example, ‘furniture making near me’ gets 100 searches per month while ‘best furniture maker near me’ gets only 10.

(Warning: the numbers you see on Keyword Planner are estimations – take them with a grain of salt.)

It’s a cool tool to use to come up with Ad Group ideas for your Search campaign.

You can also use this tool for your SEO and write articles that answer questions about those popular keywords.

There are also paid tools similar to the Keyword Planner like Semurush, Ahrefs etc.

But based on my experience Google Keyword Planner is pretty handy.

No need to subscribe to those paid tools especially if you’re on a tight budget.

Here’s the downside of the Keyword Planner though:

You might find it intimidating to use it if you’re starting out.

It takes time and effort to search for keywords, group them to create Ad Groups.

Plus, you don’t know if these Ad Groups are going to work at all.

So, all the work of searching and finding these keywords might go to waste as you make assumptions what might work and how users search for services similar to yours.

Imo it’s better to set up your campaign with as little keywords as possible and expand as you go.

Build 2-3 Ad Groups, run the campaign and check your Search Terms regularly.

You’ll find out how prospects really search for your services.

Your job is to create new Ad Groups and keep testing.

It’s a lazy way to build a campaign.

But it’s 100% effective (and less time consuming).
